One of the most unique aspects of skiing in the Portes du Soleil is the ability to ski seamlessly into Switzerland. It's not every day you get to cross an international border without leaving the slopes.
At Pulse Snowsports, we always recommend that advanced skiers make the journey into the Swiss side of the Portes du Soleil ,particularly during busy holiday periods.
The smaller Swiss resorts often have quieter slopes, allowing you to escape the crowds while still enjoying easy access to the extensive terrain and world-class facilities of the larger French resorts, such as Morzine and Avoriaz.
Another major advantage is that you can enjoy the unique experience of skiing in Switzerland while staying in France, where accommodation is generally much more affordable.
It's the perfect way to experience the best of both countries without paying Swiss accommodation prices.
There's something truly special about taking the whole family on a chairlift into Switzerland. One moment you're admiring breathtaking panoramic views from the summit, and the next you're skiing effortlessly into a completely different country, all without the stress or hassle of airports, passports, or transport.
Morzine-Avoriaz is one of the best skiing and snowboarding destinations in Europe, but it's certainly not just for experts.
The resort caters to every ability level, from complete beginners to seasoned skiers and snowboarders.
Those new to skiing can take advantage of the fantastic beginner area and Magic Carpet at the top of the Pleney Bubble.
Once you've built your confidence, there are some excellent long green and blue runs on the Avoriaz side of the resort, accessible from the top of the Super Morzine Bubble or via the Prodains Express.
Do bear in mind that many of the slopes around Avoriaz are accessed by chairlifts.
If it's your first time on skis, we recommend starting at the beginner area on the Pleney, where the magic carpet and gentle progression slopes provide the perfect environment to develop your skills before venturing further across the ski area.
For more advanced skiers and snowboarders, there's an incredible variety of terrain to explore.
From long, sweeping red runs to demanding black pistes, the Portes du Soleil has something to challenge every experienced rider.
One of the most famous runs is Le Mur Suisse (The Swiss Wall), a largely ungroomed, extremely steep black run featuring enormous moguls that can often be as tall as a person. It's an iconic descent and a true test of both skill and endurance.
There is also access to around 10 major snow parks and freestyle areas across the Portes du Soleil, although the exact number varies depending on snowfall and the time of the season.
The main freestyle hub is the Arare Snowpark in Avoriaz, the flagship snowpark of the Portes du Soleil. It offers features for intermediate right through to expert riders, with plenty of rails, boxes, kickers and an enormous Big Air line for those looking to send it.
If you don't fancy hitting the features yourself but still want to soak up the atmosphere, the snowpark is a great place to watch some seriously talented skiers and snowboarders. Throughout the season there are plenty of freestyle competitions and events, many of which are free to watch.
Be sure to pop into the tourist information office to see if there are any last-minute competitions or events taking place during your stay.
The Portes du Soleil is one of the largest linked ski areas in the world, stretching across both France and Switzerland.
Here are a few key statistics that highlight just how incredible the skiing on offer really is.
There are 12 linked resorts across the Portes du Soleil, all connected by more than 200 ski lifts and over 300 marked pistes. One of the things that makes the Portes du Soleil so unique is the sheer number of mountain restaurants.
With more than 90 ski-in, ski-out restaurants dotted across the mountains, you're never far from an incredible lunch spot or a sunny terrace with breathtaking views.
Whether you're here for a full-on ski adventure or simply want a leisurely morning taking in the scenery before enjoying lunch at a secluded mountain restaurant, the Morzine ski area is hard to beat. It really does have something for everyone, from complete beginners to seasoned skiers.
Hiring skis or snowboards for the whole family isn't cheap, but the good news is that the quality of equipment available in Morzine is excellent. Many of the local hire shops stock high-spec skis and snowboards that are expertly maintained by experienced ski technicians, meaning you'll get equipment that's in fantastic condition.

One of the best things about a winter holiday in Morzine?
You don't have to ski to enjoy the incredible mountain views.
The Portes du Soleil lift system gives pedestrians access to many of the resort's most spectacular viewpoints via the Pleney Bubble, Prodains Express, Nyon Cable Car, Ardent Bubble and the Plateau Chairlift.
From the top, you can explore panoramic winter walking trails, discover breathtaking viewpoints, and enjoy fantastic Alpine restaurants and après-ski bars, all without ever clicking into a pair of skis.
It's the perfect option for families, walkers, photographers, or anyone who simply prefers to experience the mountains at a more relaxed pace.
Morzine is the perfect base for exploring the area's incredible network of hiking trails.
Whether you're looking for a gentle scenic walk or want to tackle one of the surrounding peaks, there's a route to suit every ability.
To cover more ground, simply hop on one of the lift systems mentioned above. They provide quick access to hiking trails further into the mountains, allowing you to spend less time climbing and more time exploring.
Keep your eyes peeled as you walk, as it's not uncommon to spot eagles soaring overhead, chamois scrambling across the mountainsides, or marmots basking in the sunshine.

The Morzine Aquatic Centre is a fantastic place to spend arest day, whether you're recovering from tired ski legs or simply looking for amore relaxed pace.
Inside, you'll find a 25m × 15m indoor sports pool, a dedicated learning pool, and a paddling pool that’s perfect for younger children.
For those in need of a proper recharge, there’s also a 160m² wellness area featuring saunas, steam rooms, and a peaceful relaxation space, ideal for easing away any post-ski aches and giving your body a well-earned break.
Hockey Club Morzine-Avoriaz, better known as the Pingouinsde Morzine-Avoriaz (the Morzine Penguins), is one of the most well-known ice hockey clubs in the French Alps.
If you're visiting Morzine in winter, catching a game is one of the most fun and energetic evening activities you can do.
They typically play one league game each weekend, along with a number of exhibition matches throughout the season.
If you're staying in Morzine for a week during ski season, there's a good chance you'll be able to catch a home game, especially between December and February.
Tickets can be purchased online or at the door.
Probably one of the best ways to experience the Alpine views, even better than hiking, is from the air.
If you haven't tried paragliding before, this is a true "must-do" during your stay in Morzine.
You’ll be driven up to the top of the Super Morzine lift, where your pilot will strap you into a tandem harness and connect you to the wing. Once the wind is right, you’ll both start running down the slope until the wing catches air and, suddenly, the ground drops away beneath you.
To be honest, this is the only part that feels slightly nerve-wracking. Once you're airborne, you can simply relax into the harness and take in the incredible views as you glide over the mountains.
The best part? You’ll almost always land somewhere very close to a beer garden, which is arguably the perfect way to finish a flight.
Mushing in Avoriaz offers an unforgettable winter experience for all ages. Options range from 1.5-hour Inuit sled tours, where you can sit back and enjoy the ride, to more hands-on experiences where you get to drive your own team of huskies through the snow.
If you feel the need for a day of easily accessible indoor activities, look no further than Woodys (often referred to as Woody Morzine).
This large indoor entertainment complex is located in Saint-Jean d’Aulps, justfive minutes outside the centre of Morzine.
It’s an all-in-one hub for food andfun, offering bowling, laser tag, karaoke, darts, axe throwing, and arcadegames.
There is always something happening in Morzine during winter.
Whether it’s the Tourist Office putting on organised activities orevents hosted by the many bars and restaurants around town, there’s rarely aquiet moment in the resort.
The Tourist Office square is often the main focal point for events throughout the winter and becomes a lively hub for everything from kids’activities to the winter Spartan race.

You can also expect plenty of live music and DJs most evenings across the bars in town.
This is one of the best things about winter in Morzine.
There’s nothing quite like enjoying an apéro to live music as thesun sets behind the mountains.
For a winter holiday in Morzine, you have two main options: flying into Geneva Airport or driving from the UK via Calais, which takes around 9 hours from the ferry crossing.
Flying is by far the easiest option. Morzine is approximately one hour and twenty minutes from Geneva Airport by transfer.
Our recommended transfer company, Skiidy Gonzales, will meet you at the airport and drop you directly at your chalet or apartment door.
Driving is also a fantastic alternative.
It gives you the flexibility to bring your own ski gear and extra equipment, as well as the freedom to explore more of the region.
It can also be handy for families, allowing you to stock up on familiar English foods before crossing into France.
You can even make the journey part of the experience by stopping overnight in Dijon or one of the other historic cities along the way.
This helps break up the travel and means you arrive in Morzine refreshed andready to start your mountain adventure.
