Who are off-piste ski lessons suitable for?

Our off-piste lessons are suitable for confident intermediate, advanced and expert skiers looking to explore beyond the marked pistes while developing their technique, confidence and mountain awareness.

Do I need previous off-piste experience?

Not necessarily. We offer lessons for skiers taking their first steps into off-piste terrain as well as experienced freeriders looking to tackle more challenging lines and snow conditions.

Is an off-piste lesson suitable for my first off-piste experience?

Yes. Many guests book lessons specifically to learn how to ski powder, variable snow and ungroomed terrain safely and confidently for the first time.

What skiing level do I need?

You should be confident skiing red runs and comfortable on most black runs in a variety of snow conditions. If you're unsure, contact us and we'll recommend the most suitable lesson option.

What is off-piste skiing?

Off-piste skiing refers to skiing outside marked and groomed pistes. This can include powder snow, variable terrain, steeper slopes, tree skiing and natural mountain environments.

What is freeride skiing?

Freeride skiing combines off-piste skiing, terrain exploration and mountain awareness. It focuses on adapting to natural snow conditions and terrain rather than skiing groomed pistes.

What's the difference between an off-piste instructor and a mountain guide?

An off-piste instructor focuses on improving your skiing technique, confidence and mountain skills while teaching in terrain they are qualified and authorised to use. Mountain guides specialise in guiding and mountaineering activities, often involving glaciers, ski touring and more complex alpine terrain.

Are your off-piste instructors qualified and trained in avalanche safety?

Yes. All off-piste lessons are delivered by fully qualified instructors who hold the appropriate certifications and permissions required to teach off-piste in. Our coaches are trained in avalanche awareness, mountain safety and risk management.

Is off-piste skiing dangerous?

Like all mountain activities, off-piste skiing involves inherent risks. Professional instruction, appropriate equipment, terrain selection and good decision-making help manage those risks and create a safer experience.

Is avalanche safety equipment required?

Yes. When skiing off-piste, all participants should carry appropriate avalanche safety equipment, including a transceiver, shovel and probe.

What avalanche equipment do I need?

You should carry a transceiver, shovel and probe in a suitable backpack. Your instructor can advise on equipment requirements before your lesson.

Can I hire avalanche equipment in Verbier?

Yes. Avalanche safety equipment can be rented from several ski rental shops in Verbier. We can recommend suitable options before your lesson.

What if I don't have avalanche safety equipment?

Avalanche safety equipment can usually be rented locally. If required, we can advise you on where to hire the appropriate equipment before your lesson.

Is avalanche training included?

Your instructor will discuss mountain safety, terrain choice and risk management throughout the lesson. More in-depth avalanche education can also be arranged on request.

Can I learn avalanche rescue skills?

Yes. We can incorporate basic avalanche safety awareness and rescue procedures into lessons where appropriate or arrange dedicated avalanche training sessions.

What will I learn during the lesson?

Lessons may cover powder skiing, variable snow techniques, steeper terrain, tactics, route selection, confidence building, mountain awareness and freeride skiing skills.

Can off-piste lessons improve my overall skiing?

Absolutely. Skiing variable snow and natural terrain improves balance, adaptability, coordination of movement patterns and confidence across all areas of skiing.

How physically demanding is off-piste skiing?

This depends on the terrain, snow conditions, current experience and objectives for the day. Off-piste skiing can be more physically demanding than piste skiing due to variable snow and terrain.

Where do off-piste lessons take place?

Lessons take place across Verbier and the wider 4 Vallées, with terrain selected according to snow conditions, weather, group ability and objectives for the day.

Do I need touring equipment?

Most off-piste lessons accessed from the lift system do not require touring equipment. If touring equipment is needed for a specific objective, we'll discuss this in advance.

What happens if avalanche risk is high?

Safety always comes first. If avalanche conditions are unsuitable, your instructor will adapt the lesson plan and terrain choice to ensure the safest and most productive experience possible.

What happens if conditions are not suitable?

Your instructor will always prioritise safety. If conditions are unsuitable for certain terrain, the lesson will be adapted to make the best use of the available snow and mountain conditions.

Will we ski famous Verbier off-piste routes?

Conditions and ability permitting, your instructor may coach you through some of Verbier's renowned off-piste terrain, including areas accessed from Mont Gelé, Tortin, Gentianes, Bruson and other sectors of the ski area.

What should I bring?

You should bring appropriate ski equipment, a valid lift pass, warm mountain clothing, goggles or sunglasses, gloves, water, snacks and avalanche safety equipment.

When is the best time of year for off-piste skiing?

Off-piste conditions vary throughout the season. January to March often provides excellent opportunities, although good conditions can occur at any point during the winter depending on snowfall and weather patterns.
